Attorney General Jeff Landry has clinched the gubernatorial race in Louisiana, marking a significant win for the GOP in a state predominantly run by Democrats for nearly a decade.
The Washington Post reported that Landry, known for his strong alliance with former President Donald Trump, secured approximately 52% of the votes in the state’s open primary. This system allows all contenders, regardless of party affiliation, to participate in the same electoral process.
Landry’s victory negated the need for a runoff, as he garnered a majority of the votes. As per Louisiana law, a second round would have been necessary had no candidate received over 50 percent of the votes.

Landry has maintained a stringent stance on crime and has been a strong advocate for conservative policies in Louisiana. His contentious agenda includes a near-total abortion ban and a prohibition on gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth.
Landry surpassed Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards, who could not contend due to term limits. Democratic candidate and former Louisiana transportation secretary Shawn Wilson trailed behind, securing slightly over 25 percent of the votes.
Landry expressed his gratitude to his supporters, stating his win signifies unity in his state and serves as a wake-up call. He also emphasized the need for a more accountable government.
