Rivian Automotive Inc RIVN is set to resume the installation of its powered tonneau covers for R1T electric trucks by the end of this month, following a previous discontinuation for upgrades.
What Happened: The updated powered tonneau cover has shown promising durability and repeatability, as stated on Rivian’s website. The company’s service team will begin reaching out to customers with service tickets in mid-October, with installations commencing later this month.
“We will be reaching out to schedule appointments on a rolling basis, not all at once,” Rivian wrote on its website.

While the new tonneau cover maintains the same look and function as the previous version, it offers improved robustness and will be covered under warranty at no additional cost.
Why It Matters: The powered tonneau cover simplifies the process of covering the truck bed with just the press of a button. However, in October 2022, production was temporarily halted due to issues encountered by several users. During this period, configuration options were limited to the manual tonneau cover or no cover at all.
Rivian in September told its customers that it plans to reintroduce this feature at a later date, but as of now, all R1T trucks will come with either a manual tonneau cover or none at all.
