Five Democratic House members introduced a resolution urging an immediate cease-fire in Gaza amidst growing concerns over humanitarian conditions in the region. The move marks a shift within the Democratic party, with a section now pushing for stronger action from the White House to restrain Israel’s response to recent attacks by Hamas.
According to The Washington Post report, the vast majority of Democrats have remained united behind Israel following the Oct. 7 attacks from Hamas, which resulted in over 1,400 Israeli casualties. However, a small yet growing faction within the party is now calling on the Biden administration to encourage Israel to limit civilian casualties and ensure the provision of basic needs and humanitarian aid to innocent Palestinians.

The resolution was introduced by Democratic representatives Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Cori Bush (D-Mo.), André Carson (D-Ind.), Summer L. Lee (D-Pa.), and Delia C. Ramirez (D-Ill.). It urges the administration to “call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Israel and occupied Palestine, to send humanitarian aid and assistance to Gaza, and to save as many lives as possible."
Remarkably, eight other progressive Democrats, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), promptly signed the resolution in solidarity.
In the midst of ongoing tensions, the Biden administration announced that the president will be visiting Israel. His administration has been working to strike a balance between Israel’s right to respond and the need to distinguish between Hamas and ordinary Palestinians.
