Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) expressed her dismay at the Republicans’ inability to elect a new speaker, stating they need a math lesson.

What Happened: Pelosi told media that "I feel sad for the institution" in the wake of Rep. Jim Jordan‘s (R-Ohio) unsuccessful bid for the position, HuffPost reported.

She emphasized the necessity of a speaker for the House to function effectively.

"I think it's sad that they're getting worse and worse."

"They should take a lesson in mathematics and learn how to count," she said as she walked off the House floor, moments after Jordan fell short in a vote to get the top Congress position.

Why It Matters: In the aftermath of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) ousting, the Republicans have failed to agree on a successor. Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Jordan have both been considered for the role but have not garnered enough support.

Jordan, a divisive figure within his party, lost by a considerable margin. The House is currently in recess, with Jordan attempting to win over his detractors. The next speakership vote, scheduled for Wednesday, is unlikely to yield a favorable outcome for Jordan.

Democrats, led by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), have suggested forming a bipartisan governing coalition with Republicans for better governance. This proposal, however, is unlikely to be embraced by Republicans seeking to maintain control of the chamber to advance their policies ahead of the 2024 elections.
