OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has dismissed the notion of a strained relationship with Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella.
Altman clarified their rapport during a conversation at the WSJ Tech Live conference on Tuesday, Business Insider reported. He stated, “I won’t pretend that it’s like a perfect relationship, but we’re nowhere near the frenemy territory.”
The two companies have been reportedly clashing over the integration of OpenAI’s model with Microsoft Corp’s Bing chatbot. Microsoft’s $10 billion investment in OpenAI has also raised issues, with Microsoft staff expressing concerns over reduced internal AI investment.

Altman added that the rise of chatbots naturally leads to competitive offerings from both companies, but he sees this as friendly competition. “We jointly want as much usage of our models as possible, so we’re super aligned there,” he said.
The Information reported in September that Microsoft is looking to decrease its dependence on OpenAI by developing its own AI model. Despite this, Altman stated that he and Nadella text “a lot.”
OpenAI, co-founded by Sam Altman and Elon Musk in 2015, launched OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November last year, which is projected to generate $1 billion in sales by August 2024.
