Jamie Raskin Says These GOP Candidates Could Win Democratic Votes For Speakership

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) named several Republicans who might garner Democratic support, including former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), and Sen. Angus King (I-Maine).

According to an MSNBC report, Raskin made the comments in a discussion with MSNBC's Chris Hayes.

“I've said from the beginning that there are a number of Republicans that I could support on a principled, power-sharing basis — assuming that our caucus were to endorse that,” said Raskin.

Cheney is a former Republican congresswoman, Romney is a retiring Senator, and King is an independent senator who aligns with the Democrats.

According to Steve Benen, a political contributor on MSNBC, although it seems unlikely that a significant number of House Republicans would rally behind any of the people on Raskin's list, the congressman’s comments underscore that Democrats are open to the possibility of supporting a GOP candidate as part of a larger agreement.

The Democrats are not seeking Republican support for their candidate. Instead, they are suggesting respected Republicans who might receive votes from the minority.
