Ivanka Trump Tries To Evade Testifying In Father's New York Fraud Trial

Ivanka Trump is contesting her subpoena in the ongoing civil fraud trial involving her father, former President Donald Trump, and brothers in New York. She’s resisting to testify against her family as per the subpoena.

What Happened: Ivanka Trump’s lawyer, Bennet J. Moskowitz, raised an objection against the subpoena just before a Friday deadline. He argues that the subpoena from the New York Attorney General’s Office is too wide-ranging, Business Insider reported.

The objection also alleges that the AG’s office mishandled the delivery of the subpoena to Ivanka Trump, citing a technical error which should absolve her from testifying. The subpoena was sent to three of her business addresses, but not directly to her.

“Each of these three subpoenas listed Ms. Trump’s name only in the ‘to’ line above the LLCs’ names and the names and addresses of their registered agents,” Moskowitz wrote.

“The body of the Subpoenas requested a ‘personal appearance’ ‘to give testimony’ at trial but did not identify any specific employee, officer, or director that the NYAG wanted to appear,” he wrote.

Previously, Ivanka Trump was a defendant in Attorney General Letitia James‘ lawsuit but her name was removed earlier this year. An appellate panel noted she had ceased all Trump Organization responsibilities in 2017, and thus the AG’s claims against her were barred under statute of limitations grounds.

However, she remains a key figure in the case against Trump and four executives from the Trump Organization, including her brothers Donald Trump, Jr., and Eric Trump. The AG alleges these five defendants continued fraudulent actions during the Trump administration and beyond.

As the Trump Organization’s executive vice president for development and acquisitions until 2016, Ivanka Trump negotiated and secured financing for various Trump’s properties. James alleges that Trump and his company used fraudulently exaggerated net-worth statements to secure favorable interest rates and other benefits from lenders, particularly Deutsche Bank, where Ivanka Trump was her father’s primary liaison.
