The New York Giants will honor 10 American hostages that were taken by Hamas during the team’s game against the Washington Commanders. The team will display 10 American flags in the stands at Metlife Stadium.
What Happened: Hamas militants ambushed Israeli civilians early in the morning on Saturday, Oct. 7, killing more than 1,000 Israelis and taking hundreds of hostages. At least 10 of the hostages taken by Hamas are U.S. citizens.
Hamas reportedly released two of the American hostages, Judith Tai Raanan and her 17-year-old daughter Natalie, on Friday. The pair are from the Chicago area and had been traveling to Israel to visit family members. The mother and daughter were released because the mother was in a poor health condition, according to CNN.
Ongoing Negotiations: Qatar negotiated with Hamas, leading to the release of Raanan and her daughter. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Majid Al-Ansari, said that the country will continue working on negotiations until all hostages are released.
Hamas says that the group currently has 200 hostages from its attack on Israel a couple of weekends ago. Hamas has said that it wants thousands of Palestinians who are imprisoned in Israel to be released before Hamas releases the Israeli hostages. Israel currently has more than 10,000 Palestinian prisoners according to Al Jazeera.
