These Two Automakers Are Yet To Say Yes To Tesla NACS

Two automakers, Volkswagen VWAGY and Stellantis STLA have yet to join the growing list of automakers supporting Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), even as the majority of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers pledge their allegiance.

As per Business Insider’s report, while other automakers are announcing their vehicles will soon support Tesla Inc.’s TSLA charging technology, Volkswagen and Stellantis remain the significant holdouts.

Volkswagen was the second-largest carmaker last year, holding 10% of the global light-vehicle market share, while Stellantis ranked fifth with a 7% global share. In terms of EVs, Volkswagen sold more than 572,000 battery electric vehicles in 2022, while Stellantis recorded 288,000 global electrified sales.

Despite both automakers planning to invest billions in plug-in product development and sales, they have yet to include NACS in their plans. Both companies have confirmed they are currently evaluating the implementation of NACS for North American customers.

While home charging remains an option for both Volkswagen and Stellantis owners, Tesla’s Supercharger network, with over 5,500 stations and more than 51,000 plugs globally, offers a significant advantage for Tesla drivers. The network’s ability to provide quick charging on road trips or in remote areas is a major factor in the EV discussion.

As automakers strive to challenge Elon Musk’s reign in the EV market, the capability to utilize Tesla’s Supercharger network may serve as a substantial selling point.
