Former U.S President Donald Trump suggested on Monday that only Jesus could confidently secure the role of House Speaker, casting doubt on the capacities of the nine current Republican hopefuls.
According to a report by Business Insider, Trump made these comments in a press interaction in New Hampshire.
“There’s only one person that can do it all the way. Do you know who that is? Jesus Christ. If Jesus came down and said, ‘I want to be Speaker,’ he would do it. Other than that I haven’t seen anyone that can guarantee it,” Trump said.
Trump, who had previously endorsed House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for the post, has indicated he will not be involved in the speaker’s race. Jordan was dismissed by Republicans last Friday following a poor performance.
Now, there are nine Republicans officially competing for the position, with House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) emerging as a leading candidate. Despite Emmer’s complex relationship with Trump, the former President acknowledged on Monday that Emmer is “my biggest fan.”
This comment comes amidst a struggle within the Republican party, which holds a slim majority, to unite behind a candidate for Speaker. Trump’s former Interior Secretary, Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.), last week voiced the sentiment, “If Jim Jordan can’t get through, Jesus can’t. So we better figure this out.”
