Jamie Raskin Says Donald Trump's Attack On Judges Pose Risk To Judiciary: 'He's Like A Mob Boss'

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) warned that Former President Donald Trump’s ad hominem attacks on two judges presiding over his trials pose physical risks to the judiciary and weaken the U.S. judicial system.

What Happened: Raskin, a constitutional law professor for over 25 years, perceives Trump’s actions as a continuation of his disregard for legal and democratic normsThe Guardian reported.

“Trump's relationship to the law and the justice system is straight out of the autocrat's playbook,” Raskin said.

"He's incapable of seeing judges acting in anything other than completely personal and political ways.

"The law and justice system are just a favor bank in Trump world. He's like a mob boss. For him, a judge is either a lackey in his pocket or his sworn enemy. Trump's legal and political agendas are fused at this point. His whole strategy is to avoid a reckoning with justice before the election."

Why It Matters: Trump currently faces 91 criminal charges, including 17 related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Additionally, he is involved in a high-stakes civil trial. Amidst these legal battles, Trump has targeted two judges with his public tirades, prompting federal and state judges in Washington D.C. and New York to issue tailored gag orders.

Despite Trump’s tactics, legal experts believe that he is unlikely to dismiss the criminal and civil charges brought against him by federal and state prosecutors in New York, Washington, Georgia, and Florida. Rather, Trump’s strategy appears to be to delay some trials with court motions while launching aggressive attacks against judges and prosecutors that could disrupt the judicial system.

Trump’s verbal assaults on judges have drawn parallels with his personal attacks against special counsel Jack Smith, who Trump has labeled as “deranged,” “crooked,” and a “thug” after Smith brought two separate cases of federal charges against him.

"Recapturing the presidency in 2024 is Donald Trump's ultimate safe haven from the legal consequences of his prior crimes. He believes it will give him all the immunity he needs for the rest of his life. He's convinced he can pardon himself for all federal crimes he's charged with and avoid all state and civil cases because of his pressing state business,” Raskin added.
