The Tesla Inc. TSLA Model Y has shattered a decade-long sales record in Denmark, surpassing the total annual sales of all other vehicles, as reported by Drive Tesla.
What Happened: On Monday, Drive Tesla reported the Model Y’s record-breaking performance in Denmark, achieved with over two months remaining in the year. The feat indicates the potential for an even higher end-year sales count.
The Model Y, launched in Denmark in the second half of 2021, quickly gained traction. Throughout 2023, the model consistently topped the monthly sales charts, outselling all other automakers. In fact, the Model Y was the highest-selling vehicle in the first half of the year, a trend that persisted into the third quarter.

As we approach the end of October, Tesla has already sold more Model Ys in Denmark this year than any other vehicle in the country’s history. According to registration data tracked by users @mortenlund89 and @Arpe_DK, a total of 12,944 Model Y units have been registered by new owners in 2023, surpassing the previous record of 12,940 units of the VW UP! registered in 2013.
The record is even more remarkable given that there are still over two months left in 2023. Given the sales pace of the first ten months, Tesla could potentially sell a couple thousand more units.
Why It Matters: This impressive milestone in Denmark reflects the global success of the Model Y. According to a Benzinga report from earlier this month, the Model Y passed the 2 million sales mark and is poised to outsell the Model 3 as the best-selling electric vehicle (EV).
The Model Y, launched in March 2020, is now one of the top-selling EVs globally, ranking among the world’s best-selling vehicles, regardless of fuel type.
