On Wednesday, nine House Democrats voted against a resolution backing Israel and condemning the Hamas attack. The resolution was otherwise supported in a 412-10-6 vote,
The Hill reported that The dissenting representatives include Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.), Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.), Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), and Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.). These lawmakers have expressed various concerns over the U.S.’s support for Israel and the lack of a two-state solution.
Although the majority of lawmakers supported Israel, criticism emerged over the airstrikes in Gaza. Some even called for the U.S. to cease funding for Israel.
The resolution came after a surprise Hamas attack that killed 1,400 Israeli citizens and took over 200 hostages. Israel responded with airstrikes in Gaza, leading to the death of 6,546 residents and injuring 17,439, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Tlaib, of Palestinian heritage, labeled Israel an “apartheid state” and called for an end to U.S. funding. Bush, Bowman, Carson, and Green also called for a two-state solution, and Lee, Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, and Ramirez expressed concern over the violence and called for peace and liberation.
