Meta Platforms Inc. META founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg thinks that one day, your feed on Facebook and Instagram will be full of AI-generated content, not friends and family.
What Happened: Zuckerberg revealed that one day, your social media feeds could be completely taken over by AI, showing you the kind of content that you want instead of showing you what your friends and family are posting.
Speaking during Meta's September 2023 quarter earnings call, Zuckerberg predicted the future of our social media feeds.
"What I predict is… I do think that the fundamental technology around generative AI is going to transform meaningfully how people use each of the different apps that we build," said Zuckerberg.
Generative AI could be the next big thing, allowing users to generate content using a few words.
"For the feed apps, I think that over time, more of the content that people consume is going to be either generated or edited by AI," Zuckerberg added.
Most of the big tech companies, including Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG GOOGL Google, Microsoft Corp. MSFT, and others, have demonstrated significant progress this year after OpenAI's ChatGPT exploded in popularity.
But the clincher in Zuckerberg's predictions is this one: "I think over time, maybe we'll even get to the point where we can just generate content directly for people based on what they might be interested in."
Why It Matters: While this just means Zuckerberg wants to maximally optimize social media feeds to keep users engaged on the platform, it could potentially result in people getting addicted to fictional worlds.
The harmful impact of Meta's platforms making children addicted to social media has united Republics and Democrats – something that has looked increasingly impossible of late.
It's not just words of caution – a bipartisan coalition of 33 states have filed a joint federal lawsuit against Zuckerberg's Meta, accusing it of using harmful techniques to keep children hooked on Facebook and Instagram. They say that this is detrimental to the mental health of children.
