ChatGPT Creator Sam Altman Launches 'Preparedness Challenge' That Can Get You $25,000 And A Job With OpenAI

If you think you are good at understanding how the bad guys think, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has a new "preparedness challenge". The top ten winners will get $25,000 and can even land a job with OpenAI.

What Happened: Altman has announced a new "preparedness challenge" for people to estimate just how well they know how bad guys think and can misuse large-language models like OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Altman's challenge is not just for fun, though – the larger motive behind this is making people aware of how malicious actors can misuse AI and large-language models in different ways.

Altman's OpenAI will offer $25,000 in API credits to the top ten entries to make it even more interesting. The best participants can also land a job with OpenAI.

"If you are good at thinking about how the bad guys think, try our new preparedness challenge focused on novel insights around model misuse," Altman said in a post.

Apart from the challenge, the Microsoft Corp.-backed MSFT OpenAI has launched a new "Preparedness team" to tackle the safety risks related to AI professionally.

Why It Matters: Large-language models like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Dall-E, and others are prone to be misused by malicious actors. From spreading misinformation propaganda to more serious crimes, these frontier AI models can do far more damage because of the scale they offer.

Safety risks for AI become an even more important aspect to focus on given that companies like OpenAI, Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG GOOGL Google, Meta Platforms Inc. META are all working towards obtaining AGI, or artificial general intelligence.

Tech personalities like Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and others have called for a "pause" on AI development, fearing the misuse of AI by malicious actors.

While Altman, too, has sought regulation of AI, he has not called for a pause yet. However, the preparedness challenge suggests he is preparing to control the threat before a malicious actor goes rogue and causes widespread havoc.
