Google Fiber has announced the rollout of an outrageously fast 20Gbps internet service that lets you download massive games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in just over half a minute.
What Happened: Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG GOOGL Google Fiber broadband service has announced a massive speed upgrade to 20Gbps. The speed upgrade is currently being rolled out to limited users in a phase-based manner, and the complete rollout is expected to be done by the end of 2023.

Google Fiber is currently operational across 17 states and announced the speed upgrade at the NetworkX event held in Paris.
Google Fiber already services thousands of 5Gpbs and 8Gbps customers – it also has some institutions customers, like the University of Missouri and the United Way of Utah County, which have access to 20Gbps speeds right now.
However, after this announcement, Google Fiber says regular customers will also start seeing early access to 20Gbps. The rollout is happening in phases, and interested customers can sign up for early access to 20Gbps here.
Eligible customers will also get a custom pre-certification Wi-Fi 7 router, enabling them to maximize their high-speed connections. Existing Wi-Fi 6 routers max out at 9.6Gbps, while Wi-Fi 7 supports speeds of up to 46Gbps.
Note that your device also needs to support Wi-Fi 7 to make full use of the speed bump.
What Can You Do With A 20Gbps Internet Connection?
While a Gigabit connection is usually sufficient for most use cases, a 20Gbps connection lets you download huge games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in a flash.
Assuming that the download speeds remain consistent and the servers are able to max out the connection, here's how long it will take to download some popular video games:
Game | Size | Est. download time |
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 | 87GB | 35 secs |
Starfield | 140GB | 56 secs |
Grand Theft Auto V | 95GB | 38 secs |
Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 (2022) | 70GB | 28 secs |
Red Dead Redemption 2 | 120GB | 48 secs |
Baldur’s Gate | 150GB | 60 secs |
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor | 155GB | 62 secs |
Beyond downloading video games, a 20Gbps connection also drastically reduces the latency, making gaming more responsive.
If you are a content creator, you can also upload your videos in a flash and work on other tasks while YouTube processes your upload.
