According to former U.S. President Donald Trump, his legal fees have soared past the $100 million mark as he faces numerous legal battles.

What Happened: As The Hill reported on Saturday, Trump announced the figure at an event in Sioux City, Iowa. He claimed his political career has cost him billions of dollars, which includes the enormous amount of his legal fees.

Trump insisted that he passed up a number of profitable opportunities while he was president to avoid potential conflicts of interest, and to show respect for the office. He also expressed his concern about the impact of these legal costs on his finances.

"It's cost me a couple of billion dollars to be a politician. Everyone else makes, they make [money]. I said, ‘No, we can't do that.' I could have made a fortune,” said Trump, according to the report.

At the moment, the former president is entangled in several civil and criminal cases, which have heavily consumed his time as he campaigns for the presidency.

Two federal cases, brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith, accuse Trump of 37 felony charges related to withholding classified documents and attempts to retain power after the 2020 election. Trump is also facing charges in two state criminal cases – one in Georgia regarding his attempts to reverse the election results, and another in New York for allegedly falsifying business records.

Last week, Trump voluntarily appeared in court for a separate New York case linked to alleged fraudulent business practices.

Why It Matters: Trump’s handling of his legal expenses has previously attracted criticism. In June, Trump was slammed by Chris Christie for diverting campaign donations to a political action committee that has been used to cover his legal costs.

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton also urged Trump in August to use his personal wealth to fund his legal defense.

Furthermore, a new book revealed in September that Trump once tried to cover a $2 million legal bill by offering a horse he claimed was worth $5 million.
