China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has indicated that the journey to a potential summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden "road to the San Francisco summit will not be a smooth one.”
What Happened: Wang, who has recently been in talks with Biden and key U.S. advisors, emphasized that the path to the anticipated meeting at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit won’t be “on autopilot,” reported CNBC.
This comes after a series of diplomatic encounters, largely initiated by the U.S., aimed at mending relations that had significantly deteriorated earlier this year following the U.S.’s alleged downing of a Chinese spy balloon.

Wang stressed the need for both the U.S. and China to “return to Bali,” referring to the last Biden-Xi meeting on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Indonesia last November. The focus of that meeting was Taiwan, competition, and communication.
According to Wang, it is crucial for Washington and Beijing to implement the consensus reached at that meeting, overcome obstacles, and gather outcomes. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining dialogue, despite the existence of various differences and unresolved issues.
Wang’s comments followed a meeting with the U.S. strategic community in Washington, where complex discussions were held on topics including the interaction between the U.S. and Chinese militaries, finance, science and technology, China’s investment environment and market access, as well as the crises in the Middle East and Ukraine.
