Newly elected Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson (R-La.) stated that he is considering subpoenaing President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, over the House’s investigations into the Biden family’s foreign business dealings.
According to The Hill report, when asked on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” if he is expected to subpoena Hunter Biden, Johnson responded, “I’m looking at that. I think that desperate times call for desperate measures, and that perhaps is overdue.”
The Speaker noted that a “full decision” has not yet been made, and he is consulting with the attorneys involved, highlighting his own experience as a lawyer.
“We’re trying to move forward on some of this very aggressively,” Johnson said.
Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) had previously announced his intention to launch an official impeachment inquiry into President Biden following House Republicans’ widespread investigations into Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings.
House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio.) have scrutinized Hunter Biden’s time on the board of a Ukrainian energy company while his father was vice president.
Despite these investigations, the House has not found any direct financial benefit for Biden from his son’s business dealings or proof that he made any policy decisions because of them.
Johnson was elected as the 56th Speaker of the House last Wednesday. His election effectively resumed the House’s normal functions. When questioned if the House’s impeachment inquiry might evolve into an official impeachment, Johnson remained non-committal.
He emphasized his support for these investigations, stating that there is a “constitutional responsibility to follow this truth where it leads.”
Johnson added, “We are going to follow the law and follow the Constitution. And I think we — you and I have a suspicion of where that may lead. But we’re going to let the evidence speak for itself.”
