Joe Biden Faces Pressure From Democrats Over His Stance On Israeli-Hamas Conflict

In the face of escalating tensions in Israel, President Joe Biden is experiencing mounting pressure from within his own party regarding his unwavering support for the Middle Eastern nation.

The Washington Post reported that Biden has refrained from joining other Democrats who are pushing for a ceasefire and has mostly avoided commenting on the methods Israel is using in what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warns will be a “long and difficult” conflict.

However, some Democrats have expressed concerns about the humanitarian aid pace, a communications blackout, and the rising Palestinian civilian death toll.

A group of over two dozen senators, including Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), called on Biden to collaborate with Israel, Egypt, and the United Nations to deliver fuel to Gaza amidst the humanitarian crisis.

U.S. national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, stated on CNN that while the situation on the ground is complex, it does not absolve Israel of the responsibility to avoid civilian casualties. Sullivan maintained that the Israeli government must distinguish between Hamas terrorists and non-combatants.

Democratic senators’ statement focused on delivering fuel to Gaza, expressing concerns that a drawn-out conflict could potentially benefit Hamas. They also questioned what would fill the void if Hamas were eliminated, considering the group currently provides government services.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) voiced concerns about Biden’s stance on the current Gaza fight, suggesting that it could potentially hurt him politically at home.

A recent Gallup survey indicated challenges Biden faces in garnering support from his own party, with his job approval rating among Democrats falling by 11 percentage points in the past month.

Biden spoke with Netanyahu on Sunday afternoon, emphasizing the need to substantially increase humanitarian aid to Gaza. The White House reports that the president pressed the need to meet the needs of civilians in Gaza.
