Joe Biden To Meet Xi Jinping Next Month, Says White House: 'Intense Competition Means Intense Diplomacy'

President Joe Biden is set to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, next month, according to a White House announcement.

The leaders of the world’s two largest economies will likely convene on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, reported CNBC.

“Intense competition means intense diplomacy,” stated White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, underscoring that U.S. policy towards China remains unchanged.

Jean-Pierre refrained from detailing Biden's agenda but did indicate that a “tough conversation” with Xi is anticipated.

This meeting follows various discussions involving key U.S. figures, including Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and CIA Director Bill Burns, among others.

The announcement comes amid an escalating conflict in Israel and ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine, situations that add strain to the U.S.-China relationship. The Chinese leader, a significant financial ally to Russian President Vladimir Putin, plays a crucial role in the Russian war effort, which the Biden administration has previously warned against supporting.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the U.S. and Western allies have imposed numerous economic sanctions on Russia, propelling the nation to become the world’s most-sanctioned country, and amplifying China’s importance as an ally to an increasingly isolated Russia.

Earlier this month, Xi and Putin met in Beijing to discuss strengthening their relationship, a significant development considering the global tensions.
