US-China Relations Need Reality Check Ahead Of Biden-Xi Summit: Experts

As the Joe Biden-Xi Jinping summit approaches, there’s a call for the U.S. to reassess its expectations from China.

This comes in the wake of a dialogue between the two nations, aiming to stabilize their relations, reported Nikkei Asia. The summit could reveal if China has the willingness and capacity to genuinely cooperate with the U.S.

A U.S. official expressed the necessity of China playing a constructive role in the Middle East. However, it remains uncertain whether China would take a stance in favor of the Biden administration, particularly concerning the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

However, the U.S. itself appears divided over its support for Israel, with a segment of the Democratic Party and many young people demanding an immediate ceasefire.

Senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, Zack Cooper, expressed similar concerns. He suggested that while there could be minor benefits from the summit, such as resuming military dialogues and increasing direct flights, China is “trying to use whatever levers they can to undermine the U.S. in the Global South.”

Another point of contention is the path of “reform and opening up” initiated by former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. The last decade has seen China shift away from this path, with current leader Xi Jinping consolidating power.

Finally, the U.S. must understand that China’s governance and decision-making structures differ significantly from its own. While the U.S. aims to correct the Chinese narrative of America’s decline, the Biden administration’s description of the U.S.-China relationship as “competition” seems to lack a strategic underpinning.

The ultimate goal of the Biden-Xi meeting should be to understand each other’s stance, which may be more crucial than making grand declarations.
