Why Kendrick Lamar's 'Dumb' Phone Is The Latest Must-Have Gadget

American singer and rapper Kendrick Lamar’s creative agency, pgLang, has introduced a limited edition of the “dumb” phone, which garnered significant attention and sold out immediately.

What Happened: On Thursday, the Light Phone 2 by pgLang was made available for purchase for $299, and by Friday morning, the entire inventory of 250 devices had already been sold out, according to the company’s official website.

This minimalistic phone provides a stark contrast to the all-in-one, feature-packed smartphones users are accustomed to. It boasts a web browser-free interface and a paper-like screen reminiscent of e-readers.

The device’s core functions include making calls, sending texts, setting alarms, and serving as a hotspot. Additionally, users can enhance its capabilities with add-on tools such as a music player, notes, a calculator, and directions, reported Business Insider.

One distinctive feature of pgLang’s version is the company’s name inscribed on the light gray case. It also includes a unique “language” tool that acts like a magic 8-ball, offering answers to questions after a shake.

Why It’s Important: The “All the Stars” singer’s personal device use remains undisclosed, but it’s part of a growing trend.

With the increasing need to curb digital distractions and screen time, more people, especially the younger generation, are turning to “dumb” phones.

Some Gen-Zers even ditch their smartphones entirely, opting for primary calling and texting devices. This shift in consumer behavior is evident as HMD Global, the maker of Nokia phones, reported substantial sales of their flip and slide phones throughout 2022, the report noted.
