In the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Aquilino Gonell, a former U.S. Capitol police sergeant, recently shared his thoughts on holding former President Donald Trump accountable.

What Happened: In a Friday interview on SiriusXM's "The Dean Obeidallah Show," Dean Obeidallah asked Gonell, who stood on the front lines during the Capitol riot, about what justice would mean to him.

Gonell, who will soon release his book "American Shield: The Immigrant Sergeant Who Defended Democracy," underscored Trump's pivotal role in the insurrection and the former president's missed opportunity to calm the situation.

"He could as easily ... say, 'You know what? This is not what I had in mind. I’m sorry. Y’all need to clear out the Capitol. You need to go home,'" stated Gonell.

"To go back to your question, what is closure for me? I don’t know. It. It could be that he [gets barred] from political office and never [sets] foot the White House," Gonell said of Trump. "It could be he go to jail. It could be that he lose everything he had because he put everybody else lives at risk."

Still, the former police sergeant told Obeidallah that he trusts that the legal process will play itself out.

"If he’s found not guilty, then so be it," Gonell said. "But at least don’t declare that everything is a witch hunt, because not everything it is."
