Watch: XPeng's Answer To Tesla's Optimus Bot Walks Across Obstacles, Kicks Soccer Ball ... And Can Drive A Car?

Chinese EV manufacturer XPeng Inc XPEV showcased its bipedal robot at its fifth annual Tech Day held in Guangzhou last month. Subsequent videos and updates released by the EV maker demonstrate the robot’s ability to perform various tasks, including sports.

What Happened: XPeng stated, “With its remarkable stability, PX5 can effortlessly navigate diverse rough terrains such as lawns and gravel. What’s more, it’s not just about stability; PX5 can play soccer and ride a Segway.”

Videos shared by the company confirm the robot’s soccer-playing and Segway-riding capabilities. What sets this robot apart, according to XPeng, is its human-like gait, which allows for a more natural appearance and extends its operational range.

The bipedal robot can maintain stability even when subjected to disturbances, such as being pushed or kicked. It can also traverse obstacles, gravel, and grass lawns. Additionally, the robot features dual arms with a high load-to-weight ratio, multiple degrees of freedom, and the ability to perform delicate grasping movements akin to human hands.

Intriguingly, the final shot of the prototype’s showcase video shows the robot behind the steering wheel of a car, leaving observers to speculate about its potential applications.

XPeng’s bi-pedal robot bears certain resemblances to EV giant Tesla Inc's TSLAhumanoid robot Optimus and yet has stark differences. While the Optimus seems sleek and tall, the XPeng bot appears shorter.

Though Tesla has previously shown off its bot walking, completing basic tasks, color sorting blocks, or performing yoga, it has never mentioned “driving” as one of Optimus’ skill sets.
