OpenAI's New Frontier: GPT-4 Turbo Packs A Punch With Expanded Memory And Reduced Costs

In a groundbreaking revelation, artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI launched a significant upgrade to its GPT-4 language model, aptly named GPT-4 Turbo, at its inaugural developer event, DevDay.

What Happened: According to a report by Ars Technica, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, unveiled the new GPT-4 Turbo at the San Francisco event held on Monday.

The enhanced model touts a larger memory, lower cost, and more recent knowledge.

Altman disclosed that GPT-4 Turbo can process approximately 96,000 words at once, a substantial increase from the prior 8,000-token context window.

The model also integrates knowledge of events up until April 2023, marking it as the most recent language model from OpenAI.

Additionally, Altman announced a reduction in the cost of using GPT-4 Turbo as an API, with it being one-third cheaper than GPT-4 for input tokens and half the price for output tokens.

Moreover, OpenAI is doubling the tokens-per-minute limit for all paying GPT-4 customers.

New APIs for DALL-E 3, GPT-4 Vision, text-to-speech, and an Assistants API were also launched, allowing developers to incorporate OpenAI’s models into their applications more effectively.

Microsoft Corporation’s MSFT CEO, Satya Nadella, also made an unexpected appearance to discuss the expanding partnership between his company and OpenAI.

Altman hinted at the future, stating, “What we launched today is going to look very quaint compared to what we’re creating for you now.”

Why It Matters: OpenAI’s announcement comes on the heels of several significant developments. Previously, it was reported that ChatGPT-parent had been contemplating developing its own AI chips to address the persistent shortage in the market.

Subsequently, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has also faced legal issues in Poland for potential violations of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.

The launch of GPT-4 Turbo, with its enhanced capabilities, is a crucial move for OpenAI as it navigates these challenges and continues to expand its AI capabilities.
