The electric vehicle industry has been taken by storm as the Rimac Nevera electric hypercar achieved a groundbreaking new Guinness World Records title for the fastest reverse speed ever recorded.
What Happened: The Nevera clocked an astonishing 171.34mph (275.74km/h) in reverse at the Automotive Testing Papenburg facility in Germany. Notably, this venue has been the site of numerous acceleration and braking records previously set by the Nevera.
With a drivetrain that features four individual motors and no gears, the Nevera can accelerate as impressively in reverse as it does forward. Going forward, the vehicle is capable of reaching 0-100mph in just 3.21 seconds and 0-200mph in under 11 seconds.
"It occurred to us during development that Nevera would probably be the world's fastest car in reverse, but we kind of laughed it off. The aerodynamics, cooling and stability hadn't been engineered for traveling backward at speed, after all. But then, we started to talk about how fun it would be to give it a shot,” Nevera Chief Program engineer Matija Renic said.
Recounting the experience of reversing at high speed, Rimac test driver Goran Drndak said, “You're facing straight out backward watching the scenery flash away from you faster and faster, feeling your neck pulled forwards in almost the same sensation you would normally get under heavy braking.” However, Nevera breezed through the record, he added.
Among its many achievements and records, Nevera in August broke Tesla Model S Plaid’s record at the iconic Nürburgring race track in Germany by 20 seconds. Croatian racing driver Martin Kodrić completed the lap in 7:05:298, breaking the record set by Tesla's Model S Plaid Track Package in 7:25.231.
