In the ongoing New York civil fraud case against former President Donald Trump, ex-Watergate prosecutor Nick Ackerman has made a bold prediction: Trump is doomed to lose.
What Happened: As per The Hill’s report on Wednesday, Ackerman states that Trump’s choice to testify after invoking the Fifth Amendment last summer is a grave mistake. “And basically at this point, Donald Trump is toast,” Ackerman remarked during a discussion on CNN.
The lawsuit, being spearheaded by the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James, is seeking $250 million from Trump, his organization, and his sons, Eric and Donald Trump Jr. The suit accuses them of a decade-long fraud, alleging they manipulated the value of the Trump Organization’s assets to decrease taxes and enhance insurance coverage.
Ackerman emphasizes that not just Trump’s testimony but his deposition from last summer, where he invoked the Fifth Amendment over 400 times to dodge questions, is also under scrutiny.
Why It Matters: The declaration by Ackerman echoes opinions previously expressed by former Trump attorney Ty Cobb in August, contributing to the dark cloud over Trump’s legal circumstances. As per a Benzinga report, Cobb had already prophesied Trump’s downfall following his third indictment, claiming that Trump was “toast.” The fraud case began on October 2nd and is anticipated to continue until mid-December.
Prior to this, in April, Richard Nixon-era White House counsel John Dean had also warned against Trump delivering a post-arraignment speech, deeming it a “terrible idea,” according to another Benzinga article.
