Ron DeSantis Challenges Trump's Bid For Presidential Nomination In Third GOP Debate: 'I'm Sick Of Republicans Losing'

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis argues that Tuesday’s election results make a convincing case for his nomination as the Republican presidential candidate over former President Donald Trump.

What Happened: DeSantis, during the third Republican debate, challenged Trump’s ability to lead the Republican party given his performance during his term in office.

“Donald Trump is a lot different guy than he was in 2016. He owes it to you to be on this stage and explain why he should get another chance,” DeSantis said.

"He should explain why he didn’t have Mexico pay for the border wall. He should explain why he racked up so much debt. He should explain why he didn’t drain the swamp.”

DeSantis hit back at Trump’s claim about Republicans getting “tired of winning”, citing recent election losses. “Well, we saw last night, I’m sick of Republicans losing,” DeSantis said.

"In Florida, I showed how it's done. One year ago here, we won an historic victory," DeSantis said. "That's how we have to do it.”

Why It Matters: Joe Biden's Democratic party achieved several victories in state and local elections on Tuesday, bolstering the President’s position as he faces falling approval ratings. Key wins included a re-election for Democratic governor Andy Beshear in Kentucky and a successful ballot measure for abortion rights in Ohio.

Democrats also managed to reclaim control of the Virginia state legislature, dealing a blow to Republican governor Glenn Youngkin. These victories, along with local election wins in Pennsylvania, are set to buoy the Democratic party as it contends with declining poll numbers for Biden.
