In a recent incident in Las Vegas, a resident credits the innovative technology of his Apple Inc. AAPL Watch Ultra for saving his life amidst a severe diabetic episode.
What Happened: A report by 9to5Mac on Tuesday reveals how Josh Furman, a man living with diabetes, was rescued during a life-threatening situation when his blood sugar levels dropped drastically, causing him to become unconscious and fall.
It was his Apple Watch Ultra’s fall detection feature that was instrumental in his rescue.
The smart wearable not only identified his fall but also automatically dialed 911, pinpointed his location for first responders and alerted his emergency contact.
With Furman unable to communicate with the 911 operator, his mother, the designated emergency contact, informed paramedics about his type 1 diabetes.
Furman recounted his ordeal, saying, “I don’t know how long I was out for, but when I woke up, the Apple Watch had basically called 911, the paramedics.”
He added, “But I could not talk. I sounded like I had a mouth full of marbles. 911 could not understand me, but they had the GPS from the watch, so they knew where I was.”
Although the Apple Watch doesn’t specifically cater to diabetic patients, its current health and safety features are potentially life-saving.
Why It Matters: This isn’t the first instance where the Apple Watch has played a critical role in saving lives.
In the past, the smartwatch has been credited for saving lives in different incidents such as a highway car crash, a heart block detection, a hit-and-run incident, a severe internal bleeding detection, and even an incident where a teenager fell into a valley.
These events highlight the significant role of Apple’s health and safety features in making a difference in emergencies.
