Brian Chesky's Airbnb Is Finally Making It Easier For You To Check In Using A Smart Lock

Airbnb Inc. ABNB has introduced smart lock integration, streamlining the check-in process for guests and eliminating the need for hosts to issue new door codes.

What Happened: On Wednesday, Airbnb unveiled a software update that enables smart lock integration. The feature is compatible with select hardware from companies such as August, Schlage, and Yale, reported The Verge.

The system auto-generates codes that guests can access through the Airbnb app, email, or notifications. After the checkout process, the codes get deactivated.

Early access-registered hosts in the U.S. and Canada will have access to the smart lock feature later this year.

The update also introduces improved review listings sortable by rating and recency, and a “Guest Favorites” tag for two million highly-rated homes.

For hosts, an AI-powered photo tour will automatically detect and organize photos by room, and a new listing editor will better communicate available amenities.

Why It Matters: These updates come amid growing scrutiny of the home-sharing platform.

Earlier this year, Airbnb faced what it called a “de facto ban” in New York City, one of its biggest markets, sparking a decline in short-term listings and leading to predictions of a major shift in the real estate landscape.

Meanwhile, October saw Airbnb facing legislative pushback throughout Europe, a region where the platform had found significant success. The backlash follows the realization by many that Airbnb could be used as a small business, deviating from its original intent as a house-sharing site for like-minded vacationers.
