OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Just 'Outmemed' Elon Musk, Shows Off ChatGPT As Daddy Of 'Grok'

Since the weekend, when Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence enterprise, xAI, launched its inaugural AI model called Grok, the tech billionaire has been time and again comparing it with ChatGPT

He touted Grok as far more advanced, full of humorous quips, and up-to-date, but now Sam Altman has suggested that anyone can make a chatbot like Grok using GPT.

What Happened: On Thursday, the CEO of ChatGPT-parent OpenAI, which was co-founded by Musk, AltmanGreg Brockman, and others in 2015, took to (formerly Twitter) and shared a screenshot saying, “GPTs can save a lot of effort.”

The screenshot appeared to show the new GPT Builder being used to create “a chatbot that answers questions with cringey boomer humor in a sort of awkward shock-to-get-laughs sort of way.”

In response, GPT Builder replies by saying, “The chatbot is set up! Its name is Grok.”

Besides this section, there’s a preview of “Grok” made by GPT with the tagline, “I tell jokes like your dad’s dad.”

Naturally, people on the internet quickly made the connection and decided that Musk had been “outmemed.”

In the comment section, people responded by saying, “Sama woke up today and chose violence.” Others said that his X account will soon get banned (because Musk owns the platform) or he will be challenged to an “imaginary cage fight” (something that never really materialized with Mark Zuckerberg).

Why It’s Important: Musk’s xAI released its first AI model to limited users earlier this week. The chatbot has piqued the interest of many users because of its rather amusing way of answering questions like “How to make cocaine.”

Musk has previously announced that once Grok exits its early beta phase, the chatbot will become accessible to all X Premium+ subscribers. The company will prioritize giving access to those users who have had the subscription for a long time.

Meanwhile, the tension between Musk and Altman started way before ChatGPT became a sensation. Musk left OpenAI in 2018 because he reportedly wanted to run it by himself but got no support from fellow co-founders, including Altman.

After OpenAI partnered with Microsoft and became a household name, Musk continuously targeted the company and the chatbot for one or the other reason, which includes the ChatGPT-parent going for-profit.
