Lucid Launches RangeXchange Bi-Directional Charging — Users Can Now Charge One EV With Another

Luxury EV maker Lucid Group Inc LCID on Thursday launched the RangeXchange, a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) adapter, enabling its Lucid Air to directly charge other electric vehicles.

What Happened: The adapter facilitates energy transfer from the battery pack of Lucid Air to another EV at a rate of up to 9.6 kW, thereby adding 24 to 40 miles per hour for most EVs currently available in the U.S. market.

“RangeXchange is a small step to further enhance the everyday usability of the electric vehicle,” Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson said.

Eric Bach, Lucid’s Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer, emphasized that the Wunderbox, which powers RangeXchange, is more than a simple charging hardware. “From giving other EVs a boost with RangeXchange today, to possible future applications like vehicle-to-home backup power, time-of-use (TOU) optimization, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power, Lucid’s proprietary bi-directional charging technology has the potential to greatly improve our customers’ lives,” he said

The RangeXchange feature will initially be available to U.S. owners. Buyers will need to purchase a separate RangeXchange charging cable adapter and the feature will be activated through an over-the-air software update.

Why It Matters: Lucid Air sedan is known for its range and battery. The company touts an EPA estimated range of up to 516 miles for its sedan and about 12 minutes to charge 200 miles. For context,  Tesla’s highest range of 405 miles trails the base model of Lucid Air; Lucid Air Pure has an EPA-estimated range of 410 miles.

“With incredible horsepower and unrivaled range, it's like no car you've ever known,” the company says on its website.
