EV giant Tesla Inc TSLA refused updates on its bot during the company’s third-quarter earnings call in October. But the company seems to be working actively on it as could be inferred from the company’s hiring page.
What Happened: There are presently over 50 job openings listed on the company’s career page for the Tesla bot. These job openings are mostly for engineers, followed by technicians. A few job titles listed on the page are reliability engineer, mechatronics engineer, engineering technician and reinforcement learning engineer. All the jobs are based out of Palo Alto, California.
During the company’s last earnings call, company CEO Elon Musk refused to provide updates on its humanoid robot nicknamed Optimus and said, "I think at this point, we are not ready to discuss details of the Optimus program." The CEO added that the periodic updates will be provided online.
Responding to a question on when Optimus will start working on gigafactory lines, Musk said, "Optimus a year ago could barely walk and now it can do yoga. So, a few years from now, it can probably do ballet."
Latest Available Update: However, a few months ago, during the company's second-quarter earnings in July, Musk said that the first Optimus that has all of the Tesla-designed actuators will be walking around November and production ramp-up will soon follow.
Sometime next year, the bots will be able to do something useful in Tesla factories, the CEO had said, while adding that he is ‘pretty confident’ about it. The Tesla bot is aimed at performing unsafe, repetitive or boring tasks.
