Tech YouTuber Arun Maini has dissected the difference between the original and modern versions of Apple’s mobile operating system’s design in his video titled “Old iOS Vs New iOS.”
What Happened: Maini, who is popularly known by the name of his YouTube channel, “MrWhoseTheBoss,” and has over 16.9 million subscribers on the platform, started the video by examining the lock screen experience.
The YouTuber acknowledged the nostalgia of the first iOS’s slide-to-unlock feature but credited the contemporary iOS for its dynamic wallpapers.

He then spoke about the design language shift, praising the original iOS icons for their skeuomorphic charm, characterized by glass shadows and texture.
However, Maini noted that despite the modern icons’ cleanliness, they lack the soulful aesthetics from the past.
“Early iOS icons, though, they go kind of hard — in design language, it is called skeuomorphism, which includes glass, shadows, texture compared to now when everything’s just flat. I do like the cleanness of current icons, but they definitely lack the soul of what they once were,” he stated.
The YouTuber then spoke about enhanced customization options of modern iOS, a stark departure from the uniformity of iOS 1, where every iPhone looked identical due to limited personalization features.
“You couldn’t originally change wallpapers, you couldn’t move icons, you couldn’t even add apps since the App Store actually released after the first iPhone,” Maini noted.
He also mentioned the simplicity of the original Camera UI with just one button, in contrast with present-day iOS’s advanced customization possibilities.
