Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk said on Sunday that customers will be able to try its full self-driving (FSD) capability’s version 12 in about 2 weeks, much to the excitement and disappointment of self-driving enthusiasts.

What Happened: “About 2 weeks,” Musk replied to a Tesla enthusiast enquiring when they could try FSD 12. X users are now split between deciding whether the CEO was joking or whether he was serious.

Musk is famous for his ‘two weeks’ timeline prediction which often doesn’t materialize and gets way longer instead. Musk himself has previously joined X users to jokingly admit that his two weeks are longer than 4 weeks.

“Now this could be next level trolling by @elonmusk because he knows historically what it means when he says "2 weeks",” a user wrote.

“About 2 weeks = at some point in the future,” another added with a laugh.

However, some considered the possibility for the CEO being serious. The company’s event for the delivery of its upcoming vehicle- the Cybertruck- is scheduled to happen at gigafactory Texas on November 30 or in about 2 weeks.

“Special announcement at the cybertruck event?,” a user asked.

“For some reason I’m inclined to take this one at face value. Some very… insubstantial reason,” another wrote.

Why It Matters: In June, Musk said that version 12 would no longer be beta, hinting that it would achieve full autonomy by then. FSD is now in beta mode, meaning it is still being tested and requires active driver supervision.

During the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai in July, Musk also said that Tesla is “very close” to achieving full self-driving capability.

“I have been wrong about this prediction in the past, but I feel we are closer to it than we ever have been,” Musk said.
