China Stuns The World With Its 1.2 Terabit Network That Can Transmit Entire Netflix Repository Under 30 Minutes

In a move that surprised the global tech industry, China has unveiled the world’s fastest internet service, boasting a 1.2 terabits per second data transmission speed. This accomplishment not only puts China ahead of its nearest competitors, the US and South Korea but also exceeds industry estimates by two years.

What Happened: China’s new fiber internet service can transmit data at a mind-boggling 1.2 terabits per second across a network that spans over 3,000 kilometers. This network connects Beijing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou and can send 150 4K movies in less than a second. To put it in perspective, this network can transmit the entire Netflix’s global content repository in under half an hour.

The network was switched on in July and officially inaugurated on Monday. This feat is the product of a joint venture between Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Huawei Technologies, and Cernet Corporation. This achievement has defied industry estimates that had anticipated the roll-out of 1 terabit per second ultra-high-speed networks by approximately 2025.

Why It Matters: This advancement is a key component of the Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI) project, a national endeavor to provide China with cutting-edge Internet technology. The FITI project, which commenced in 2013, is backed by the government and engages 40 universities.

This network’s entire software and hardware system have been developed domestically, thereby reducing China’s dependence on the US and Japan for internet technology components. This achievement underscores China’s rapid technological progress and its strategic move towards self-reliance in key technology infrastructure.
