Amazon Blocks Promotions For Employees Defying Return-To-Office Policy, Leaked Documents Reveal

In a significant shift in its promotion eligibility norms, Amazon Inc. AMZN has decided to link adherence to its return-to-office (RTO) policy with the possibility of promotions. Non-compliance could potentially stall promotions, necessitating approval from a vice president.

As reported by Business Insider, Amazon has issued instructions to managers that employees who are in line for promotions must comply with the company’s RTO mandate. This policy requires employees to be in the office a minimum of three days a week. Non-compliance will require a green light from a vice president, or the promotions could be put on hold, as evidenced by internal communications.

In a statement to Insider, the company’s spokesperson stated that adherence to the RTO policy is one among several factors that are taken into account while promoting an employee.

“Promotions are one of the many ways we support employees’ growth and development, and there are a variety of factors we consider when determining an employee’s readiness for the next level. Like any company, we expect employees who are being considered for promotion to be in compliance with company guidelines and policies,” the spokesperson said.

The introduction of these new criteria is the latest development in Amazon’s contentious return-to-office process. Prior to this, Amazon had empowered managers to terminate employees who did not adhere to the RTO policy. Amazon employees have been expressing their disagreement with the RTO mandate since it was introduced in February.
