In a recent development, Steve Bannon, the former White House strategist, has taken issue with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) regarding the passage of an unconventional two-step continuing resolution.
What Happened: Bannon, on Wednesday, issued a warning to Johnson in the wake of the controversial spending bill’s passage earlier this week, as reported by The Hill.
During his podcast, Bannon communicated his concerns directly to Johnson, stating that the new House leader is “on the clock.” Bannon’s comments were first spotlighted by Mediate.
Bannon’s objections were also aired on social media, where he pointed out, “This was a Surrender/Cave to the UniParty — it can't be looked @ in any different light — only win was dropping of all the Supplemental Ukraine funding…Speaker now ‘on the clock' with 75 Days to achieve ‘Conservative Victories.'”
The contentious bill in question, which was approved through a 336-95 vote, extends funding at the current levels for some agencies and programs until Jan. 19 and all others through Feb. 2. Johnson’s two-step, or “laddered,” CR was designed to circumvent an end-of-year omnibus spending bill, a measure often opposed by Republicans.

In addition to his criticism of the spending bill, Bannon also criticized Johnson’s frequent appearances on Fox News, implying the Speaker is dedicating too much time to ‘Murdoch News.’
Why It Matters: Bannon’s recent comments serve as a reflection of the growing dissension within the Republican ranks, casting a shadow over Johnson’s leadership and the party’s future direction.
Johnson’s ascension to the position of the Speaker of the House was hailed as a relief to many, following a period of disarray in the House of Representatives, as reported by Benzinga.
Recently, the newly elected speaker has been in the news for the passage of the stopgap spending bill that he proposed, which attracted Bannon’s criticism. This week Johnson publicly endorsed former president Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential bid, despite having previously been a vociferous critic of the erstwhile leader.
