In the latest twist in his ongoing criminal investigation, Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, is seeking a subpoena against former President Donald Trump, alleging that Trump applied political pressure on his case.
What Happened: A Politico report on Tuesday revealed that Biden has asked a judge to sanction subpoenas for documents from Trump and previous Justice Department officials.
Biden asserts that improper and partisan pressure was put on Trump’s then-Attorney General William Barr and two senior deputies, Jeffrey Rosen and Richard Donoghue, during Trump’s tenure. Public remarks by Trump, data from the House committee that probed the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, and excerpts from Barr’s book form the basis of these allegations.

The inquiry into Biden’s taxes and a firearm purchase was initiated in 2018, during Trump’s presidency. Charges were not brought until this year while attorneys tackle the federal firearms case against Biden. He is indicted for violating laws prohibiting drug users from possessing guns. The case may go to trial in 2024, coinciding with President Biden’s re-election campaign.
It was expected that Hunter Biden would confess to misdemeanor tax charges in a deal with prosecutors that would have evaded prosecution on the gun count. However, the deal fell through after a judge expressed concerns during a July hearing. New tax allegations could be lodged against Biden in Washington or California, where he currently lives.
Why It Matters: Last month, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) indicated that he was contemplating a subpoena for Hunter Biden in connection with the House’s probe into the Biden family’s overseas business dealings.
This new development suggests a continued and escalating legal back-and-forth involving members of the Biden family.
