You Won't Have To Buy High-End Phones To Enjoy On-Device AI Features, Thanks To Qualcomm's New Chipset

Qualcomm Inc. QCOM wants budget phone buyers to use shiny new artificial intelligence (AI) features, and the chip maker’s new Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset aims to do just that.

What Happened: Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset, aimed at mid and upper-mid range phones, comes with some new AI tricks up its sleeve.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7-series chipsets have been used by budget and mid-range phones, like Carl Pei's Nothing Phone 1 and Motorola's foldable phone Razr 40, among others.

While the chipmaker has so far restricted its advanced AI-focused features to its top-end Snapdragon 8-series chipsets, those features are now trickling down to the more affordable mid-range segment, too.

Some of these on-device AI features in the new Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset will directly improve photography by reducing grainy textures and noise in photos.

Qualcomm also says that the new chipset uses AI to improve face detection, so the phone's camera focuses better on subjects.

In terms of performance, the new Snapdragon chipset uses AI to understand better how apps and routines are used. This is then used to tailor performance based on the user's usage patterns.

All these features leverage on-device AI, so users don't have to worry about privacy or performance issues. Qualcomm also says that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset delivers 15% faster CPU, 50% faster GPU performance, and 20% better power efficiency compared to last year's Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset.

Why It Matters: The trickling down of new AI features to more affordable smartphones will help increase the number of people using AI, thereby allowing companies like Qualcomm, Google, and other device makers to offer better AI features.

You also won't have to buy the latest $1,000 smartphone to enjoy AI features, which is another win for consumers.
