U.S. President Joe Biden‘s approval rating has dipped to a record low amid criticism over his handling of foreign policy issues and the recent Israel-Hamas conflict, as per a recent NBC News poll.
What Happened: The national NBC News poll conducted between Nov. 10-14 shows that President Biden’s approval rating has sunk to a historic low of 40%. The decline is largely attributed to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, with dissatisfaction being widespread among all voter demographics.
The poll indicates a significant erosion in Biden’s support base among Democrats. A majority of these voters believe that Israel’s military action in Gaza has been disproportionate. Voters aged 18 to 34 have shown a striking 70% disapproval of Biden’s management of the conflict.
"I do not support his support of Israel," said a 40-year-old Democrat voter from Texas, according to the report.
Furthermore, the poll, which surveyed 1,000 registered voters, reveals a hypothetical general-election matchup where Biden lags behind former President Donald Trump, although within the poll’s margin of error.
However, pollsters believe Biden still has an opportunity to regain the support of dissatisfied Democrats and young voters. They also note that unexpected events and trials could alter the current political landscape before the 2024 Election Day.
Why It Matters: The poll found that Trump gets support from 46% of voters, while Biden has 44%. The ex-president now has a narrow lead over the incumbent, compared with September when both were tied.
The dip in Biden’s approval rating comes against the backdrop of potential competition from Trump in the 2024 elections. According to a Benzinga report, Trump has been leading Biden in national polls for the upcoming election.
Trump has also been leading in the Republican presidential primary, as per a Benzinga report, which could present a challenge for Biden in the general election.
Earlier Benzinga reported that that Trump was leading Biden nationally and in key battleground states, contradicting claims made by Trump’s GOP rivals about his chances in a general election against Biden.
