Ron DeSantis Takes A Swipe At 2024 GOP Frontrunner: 'Father Time Is Undefeated. Donald Trump Is Not Exempt From Any Of That'

Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis, took a swipe at Donald Trump, voicing his concerns about the age of the former President as the 2024 presidential election race heats up.

What Happened: DeSantis, in an interview on CNN, expressed doubts about the suitability of the presidency for someone in their eighties, directly taking aim at Trump.

DeSantis, who is also a potential Republican presidential candidate, indicated that Trump is not the same individual he was during his first campaign in 2015 and 2016. "This is not the same guy as the Trump in 2015 and '16. That Trump would show up on the debate stage, he would barnstorm."

"Now he's wedded to the Teleprompter, he's not willing to debate, and he's running on many of the same things he promised to do in 2016 and didn't deliver."

"Look, when you get to this point — the presidency is not a job for somebody that's pushing 80 years old, I just think that that's something that has been shown with Joe Biden," DeSantis said.

"Father Time is undefeated. Donald Trump is not exempt from any of that," he added.

Why It Matters: The issue of age has become a recurring theme in the 2024 presidential race, especially as voters brace for a potential face-off between Trump and the current President Joe Biden.

Should Trump win the 2024 election, he would be 78 at the commencement of his second term. This age places him about four years junior to President Biden, whose age has become a topic of concern among Republican adversaries and some polled voters. Biden would turn 81 on Monday.

In September, Biden was considered to be too old to run for office by 73% of the respondents in the WSJ poll.
