Advertisers Privately Urging X CEO Linda Yaccarino To Resign Amid Elon Musk's Endorsement Of Anti-Semitic Post: Report

The controversy surrounding Elon Musk‘s recent endorsement of an anti-semitic post on X has led to advertisers pulling out, intensifying the pressure on X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, to step down.

What Happened: According to a report by the Financial Times, several advertising industry executives and friends have privately urged Yaccarino to resign to protect her reputation. This comes in the wake of Musk’s controversial post and the presence of antisemitic content on X’s platform.

Yaccarino, who assumed the role of CEO in June, has rejected calls for her resignation, standing by X’s mission and its team.

Musk recently drew criticism for endorsing an antisemitic conspiracy theory on X. At the same time, Media Matters for America, a non-profit group, revealed that ads from major brands were appearing next to “pro-Nazi” and white supremacist content.

As a result, companies including IBMApple Inc.Walt DisneyComcast, and Warner Bros have halted their advertising on X, distancing themselves from Musk following his comments.

Yaccarino, previously the head of advertising at NBCUniversal, was brought in by X to win back advertisers after several withdrew their support due to Musk’s lax moderation practices and staff reductions.

Why It Matters: As major brands continue to suspend their advertising on X, the platform’s revenue and reputation are under threat. This situation also raises questions about the role of platform owners in moderating content and the impact of their personal views on the platform’s standing.

Crisis management guru Eric Dezenhall addressed the controversy and expressed that it is not easy to advise people like Musk, who think they are consistently right. This leads to people around the person diving in front of them to take the bullet, referring to Yaccarino facing the heat for Musk's misstep.

Musk is also facing a possible backlash from U.S. lawmakers who are calling the situation “outrageous and dangerous.”
