OpenAI's Sam Altman might be one of the most important leaders in the world when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI), but his salary in 2022 was less than that of a system administrator.
What Happened: OpenAI's non-profit parent company has reported its finances for the year 2022, revealing the salary its key personnel like Altman, Greg Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever drew during the year.
While there is not much known about the finances of the for-profit and Microsoft Corp-backed MSFT OpenAI that makes ChatGPT, the non-profit parent's filing at least reveals how much it pays some of the most sought-after AI talent in the world.
According to the filings, Altman was paid $73,546 in 2022, a figure that is lower than the average salary of a system administrator in the US, which is $90,520, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In fact, going by the BLS numbers, Altman made less than the median pay of accountants in 2022.
His colleagues and fellow co-founders Brockman and Sustkever made much more, though. While Brockman took home $113,727, Sutskever made substantially more at $334,572.
Why It Matters: Although Altman makes a lot less salary at OpenAI and does not hold any equity in the company, he is the face of it and has most employees loyal to his vision.
Beyond this, Altman's net worth is estimated to be in the $500 million to $700 million range, so drawing a considerably low salary at OpenAI might not be material to him.
