A recent poll by the Pew Research Center has shown that the firm stance of former President Donald Trump is favored by GOP voters over the more accommodating strategies of other Republican presidential hopefuls.
What Happened: The Hill reported that according to a poll released on Thursday by the Pew Research Center, roughly 63% of Republican voters who support Trump would rather have him uphold GOP policies than seek common ground with Democrats. The percentage exceeds that of supporters for any other Republican primary candidate.
Republican voters appear split down the middle, with half stressing the importance of political compromise. Of the other GOP candidates, supporters of ex-U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley showed the most favor towards compromise, with 72% expressing this viewpoint. A slight majority of Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) backers also advocated for compromise over partisanship.
The poll suggests that Trump's popularity among GOP voters is notably higher than that of other candidates, largely due to his significant lead in national primary polls. Trump currently maintains a 51-point lead over DeSantis and Haley, both of whom hold around 11% support.
The survey, carried out from late November to early December, also showed that two-thirds of GOP voters don’t expect the primary race to be a nail-biter, while 56% find the campaign uninteresting.
Why It Matters: The Pew Research poll aligns with recent developments in the Republican camp. Trump has been in the spotlight for his ongoing civil fraud lawsuit against the Trump Organization and his decision to bypass the fourth Republican primary debate. Despite these issues, he has managed to maintain his leading position among Republican presidential candidates for the 2024 election.
