Troubles for Elon Musk‘s X are mounting. The social network is now under formal scrutiny by the European Union (EU), following possible violations of the Digital Service Act (DSA).
What Happened: The EU has officially initiated an investigation into X, focusing on potential breaches of the DSA regulations.
The European Commission announced in a press release that the investigation will concentrate on four major areas. These encompass the propagation of unlawful content, the effectiveness of X in combating misinformation, the transparency of the platform, and the potentially misleading layout of X’s user interface.
“The higher the risk large platforms pose to our society, the more specific the requirements of the Digital Services Act are,” remarked Margrethe Vestager, EU Executive Vice-President. Vestager further stated that the EU takes any infractions of its regulations very seriously and that the existing evidence was sufficient to commence proceedings against X officially.
Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for Internal Markets, stressed that launching formal proceedings against X represents the end of large online platforms behaving like they are ‘too big to care’.
Why It Matters: This investigation follows ongoing concerns about disinformation on social media platforms. In October, X responded to the EU’s request for details on measures taken to combat disinformation during the Israel-Hamas conflict.
X had outlined how its controversial Community Notes feature was used to provide context to posts, videos, and photos shared on the platform. EU’s formal proceedings against X highlight an increasing intolerance for potential misuse of social media platforms, signaling a shifting digital-regulation era.
