In a recent development, Michael Cohen, once a close aide to former President Donald Trump, has publicly accused Trump of making racist and antisemitic remarks. The allegations were made during a broadcast on MSNBC.
What Happened: As reported by The Wrap on Wednesday, Cohen made his accusations on MSNBC Wednesday afternoon, decrying Trump’s escalating racially charged rhetoric. He said that Trump “knows exactly what he's saying,” with assistance from advisors such as the far-right political advisor Stephen Miller.
In his 2020 book “Disloyal: A Memoir,” Cohen recalled a disturbing incident where Trump made an off-color remark to a German employee of the Trump organization, insinuating that his family may have persecuted Jews during the Holocaust.
"He is playing to the lowest denominator of Americans that exist in this country, the racist, antisemitic animals that exist in that MAGA world. That's who he's playing to," expressed Cohen on the show.
“He will then steep and go much lower to the point that even I can't tell you how low he will go,” he added.
Why It Matters: Once a close aide, Cohen worked as Trump’s fixer and lawyer, helping him increase the former president's asset value. In October, Cohen testified against Trump and admitted to aiding him in providing incorrect information in financial statements.
In an interview with CNN in November, Cohen suggested that Trump could potentially face jail time due to his ongoing legal troubles. He went on to express certainty that Trump would find himself behind bars eventually.
