Samsung Shows Off Concept Phone That Folds In Both The Directions: Could This Be The Future Of Foldable Phones?

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. SSNLF has demonstrated what could be the next generation of foldable phones – displays that fold in both directions.

What Happened: As reported by CNET, Samsung’s showcase at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 featured the Flex In & Out Flip concept device. The flip phone, equipped with a 6.7-inch screen, can be folded both inward and outward, even functioning with the device closed.

When folded backward, the concept device is shorter on one side to ensure the camera is not covered. Although still conceptual, this new design from Samsung’s Display team provides a sneak peek into the future of tech devices that can flex, bend, and fold to better integrate into users’ lives.

The unveiling of the dual-direction flex display could be a precursor of the direction in which Samsung might take its foldable Flip phones.

Samsung has also tested the durability of this dual-folding display, saying that it has undergone extreme temperature folding and impact tests.

Given CES is primarily a display event, Samsung showed off more upcoming display technologies it is working on.

Why It Matters: Samsung’s unveiling of the dual folding display comes nearly six months after the company launched its fifth-generation foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. The previous models unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event in July 2023 were highlighted for their updated hinge and larger screen cover.
