Microsoft's Notepad To Get AI-Powered 'Cowriter' Feature For Windows 11: Here's What We Know

Microsoft Corp. MSFT is reportedly set to introduce a new AI feature for its Notepad application that comes with Windows 11.

What Happened: The tech giant’s plans for an AI-driven feature in Notepad are evidenced in the code of the latest Windows 11 test builds, according to a report by The Verge. The “Cowriter” feature operates on a credit system similar to that of the Cocreator feature in Paint.

Microsoft has not yet announced the pricing for these credits. However, it appears likely that the company will eventually start charging once the credits are exhausted. Other Windows testers have found references to a waitlist for the Cowriter feature and a hero image that Microsoft may use for its Notepad Cowriter marketing.

Why It Matters: Microsoft has been making significant strides in integrating AI into its products. The company recently launched a dedicated AI-driven Copilot app on Android, offering chatbot features, image creation with DALL-E 3, and text composition for emails and documents.

These moves come after the tech giant phased out WordPad in its Windows 11 update, marking the end of an era for the word-processing application that has been part of Windows for 28 years. The introduction of the Cowriter feature aligns with Microsoft’s vision of making 2024 the “year of the AI PC.”

Tom Warren, the author of The Verge’s report, expressed his concern about Microsoft’s AI push, suggesting that it could lead to upselling users into buying AI credits. He called for Microsoft to continue improving Notepad in meaningful ways.

Apart from the new AI feature, Notepad on Windows 11 has seen significant upgrades in recent years, including dark mode, tabs, character count, autosave, and the automatic restoration of tabs.
